Lecture title:

It’s All Airway: The Evolution of Complex Treatment Planning to Include Airway Dysfunction

Learning objectives:

  • “Global” Diagnosis concepts and the link to airway deviations
  • Dentistry’s unique ability to recognize airway alterations before medical disease progression
  • Create an autonomic nervous system trial to direct the practitioner in developing a health-based interdisciplinary plan

Evolution is taking an existing concept and modifying it. Revolution is seeing the world in a new light. Dr Rouse has been fortunate enough to be a part of both in his career. Along with Dr Bill Robbins, Dr Rouse systematized the Facially Generated Treatment Planning concepts of Drs Kois and Spear. This “Global” Diagnosis concept distilled their work into the “5 CORE Questions” required to diagnose and provide interdisciplinary treatment to complex restorative patients. The revolution came when Dr Rouse linked the CORE answers to craniofacial developmental issues. Most are due to swallowing and breathing alterations early in growth. These modifications can create adult challenges to oral and systemic health. The concepts of Prevent…Control…Resolve and the Seattle Protocol came from a personal journey with his son, Jake, and himself.
